Data from the U.S. Census Bureau indicates that while the nation’s older population is expanding, the number of younger residents is decreasing. Americans 65 and older increased by 13% between 2020 and 2024, whereas those under age 18 dropped by 1.7%. Growth of the older population has been significant in the United States over the past century—rising from 4.9 million people in 1920 to more than 61 million by 2024.
A 2021 analysis estimates nearly half of those 65 and older—close to 28 million—may ultimately need long-term services or support, with projections indicating more than a third could require nursing home care at some point.
“Living a long life is something that many of us want and could get,” said Jesse Slome, executive director of the American Association for Long-Term Care Insurance, an educational organization for insurance. “But when we live a long life, the chances of us needing long-term care increase exponentially. But when you need that type of care, there are limited options.”
