City of Belmont issued the following announcement on Nov 13.
“Athletes of the City of Belmont and San Mateo County have waited a long time for this moment. In a year that’s been very difficult for our city and our neighbors, we are thrilled to have completed this project and look forward to enjoying the benefits that sports brings us all – sportsmanship, challenge, and camaraderie,” said Mayor Warren Lieberman.
The City of Belmont converted over 4 acres of natural grass to synthetic turf and upgraded the athletic experience for players and spectators who visit the Complex.
Constructing a synthetic turf field at the Belmont Sports Complex has been a goal for City Council and the Community for more than a decade. The field layout and design were discussed at numerous community, youth sports league, City Council and Parks and Recreation Commission and subcommittee meetings. A design alternative was first selected in 2013 but was tabled due to lack of funding. In early 2018, the design was reaffirmed by the Parks and Recreation Commission and City Council and authorization was granted to finalize design and construction documents. Following additional iterations and reviews by youth sports representatives, Commission and Council, the design was completed in 2019. However, due to rising construction costs, the project was again at risk of delay.
On December 10, 2019, the San Mateo County Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution providing Belmont with financing of the $6 million construction cost to allow the project to proceed in 2020. The City entered into a Lease and Sublease Agreement with the County of San Mateo for a ten-year term with annual payments of $668,000. These payments will be primarily sourced through park impact fees received from housing development projects in Belmont.
This project will provide numerous benefits to the sports community by increasing playable hours, reducing water and maintenance costs, and providing a safer, consistent playing surface.
The North Field improvements include replacement of all subsurface drainage, installation of synthetic turf with cork infill to provide a U12 soccer field, a U19 soccer field, a baseball field with a dirt pitching mound, and field striping to also provide for two additional U12 soccer fields or a lacrosse field. New netting, fencing and energy efficient lighting were also installed. The field will be open for use by permitted youth sports leagues shortly.
