There were 13 patents granted in Torrance in the week ending Aug. 22, according to the United States Patent and Trademark Office.

This is eight more than the week before. Patents included an ophthalmic lens design incorporating a visual acuity profile.

The number of approved patents in the U.S. grew steadily from roughly 225,000 in 2009 to more than 285,000 in 2019. The number of patents approved suffered a slight downturn in 2020.

Gene Quinn with IPWatchdog said the system underneath patents have become unwieldy, specifically for medical innovations.
